Hurricane Earl Cruise Impacts

Hurricane Earl has caused several ships to change itineraries in order to avoid the storm. Some of the most popular Islands in the Caribbean like St. Maarten and St. Thomas are too close to the projected path of Hurricane Earl. So in the interest of safety and not ruining vacations the cruiselines have altered some itineraries of ships currently cruising the Caribbean.

Carnival Victory, Carnival Pride, Carnival Dream, Norwegian Epic, Enchantment of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, and possibly the Norwegian Dawn will have their itineraries modified due to the storm. You can see all the details on these changes on the CruiseSource.us Hurricane Cruise Tracker page.

Week Recap: WSJ, Twitterview, My Brother Walks

My Best Week Evar? Probably not… the week my daughter was born was pretty special. The Cruise to Italy on the Inaugural sailing of the Costa Deliziosa rocked… and I am pretty sure there are some others that rank up there. Life isn’t always roses! As a former Quizno’s Franchise owner/operator, I’ve had my share of miserable weeks too… especially the ones where our store was broken into (the one where they knew the code to the safe was the worst). Luckily those days are way behind me!

As a Cruise Geek who loves Social Media, this week was pretty awesome. I was Twitterviewed by @nclandy, Andy Stuart EVP of Global Sales for Norwegian Cruise Line. A twitterview is a public, open interview live on Twitter in which the audience can participate. I was quoted this week in the mecca of business print, the Wall Street Journal about cruise pricing trends this summer. @93octane (Lyell Petersen) and I hosted a South by Southwest Q&A at our local Business Tweetup, #btynbiz. @ericfraz, writer for the Charlotte Observer, wrote a quick article about the Q&A session. The best part of the Tweetup was meeting several local business people joining us to learn more to start their journey into using Social Media to strengthen current relationships and to generate new business. To cap off the week, last night I came in second in the Twitter Poker Tour weekly game out 30+ entrants.

THE BEST NEWS OF THE WEEK: Mike, my younger brother, walked for the first time since his car wreck on December 17th, 2009. He first used crutches and has now walked a few steps without the crutches… he was lucky to have lived through the accident, and even luckier that his feet were not amputated due to compound fracture and . After 3 months of being in a hospital bed and wheelchair, it made my week to hear that he’s able to begin the process of strengthening his legs to be able to walk again. ~ Happy Sailing, Rich Tucker

Oasis of the Seas, drops below $900

Announcement: The Oasis of the Seas is now selling for under $900 on multiple dates in May 2010. All cruise vacations between April 11 – May 22 have been selling for quite a discount. The Cruise Lines can’t wait to get beyond Spring and into this Summer. Cruise Rates in the Summer have been continuously increasing while the Spring has been difficult especially in the Caribbean.

I was not expecting the Oasis of the Seas to be reduced below $900 until the Winter of 2010/2011 when the Allure of the Seas will be competing for passengers. If you are looking for an Oasis of the Seas deal over the Summer, the rates are increasing steadily with rates starting at $1299 per person.

If you are looking for one of the larger Suites on the Oasis of the Seas, you will need to start your search for after the 1st week in August 2010. Click here to see all of the 2010 Oasis of the Pricing. ~ Happy Sailing ~ Rich Tucker

Star Princess Departure from Chile, Delayed due to Earthquake

Thank you OnDaBoat for reporting in the comments of the my last post that the Star Princess will not sail on 3/2/2010 from Valparaiso Chile as planned.  Below is the latest release from Princess about the status of the Star Princess:

3/1/2010

Update on Star Princess Turnaround in Valparaiso, Chile — March 2

Star Princess will end its current cruise in Valparaiso, Chile as scheduled on Tuesday morning, March 2. The cruise terminal is open and operational.

The airport there is operating on a very limited basis, and the vast majority of inbound and outbound flights have been cancelled. We are closely monitoring the situation.

Should air service remain limited on Tuesday, we plan to keep Star Princess in Valparaiso for at least another 24 hours so our passengers who are unable to fly out, will be able to stay onboard until flight operations resume. Passengers who are already in Valparaiso will also be able to embark and stay on board the ship.

At this point we plan to operate the following cruise, which is sailing to Rio de Janeiro. We will keep passengers informed of any changes to the itinerary, but the earliest we would sail from Valparaiso would be Wednesday, March 3 at 6 pm.

Passengers who have booked their outbound or inbound air through Princess are being re-booked, and any modification to pre- or post packages have been taken care of.

For passengers onboard who had made independent travel plans in Valparaiso, we have assisted them by checking on the status of their hotel, and have provided them with this information.

This is a fluid situation and can change at any time. We are continuing to provide updates to our passengers as we receive new information.

Passengers with additional questions can call 1-800-PRINCESS (1-800-774-6237).

Star Princess – Valparaiso Chile – Earthquake Update

I just got off the phone with Princess Cruise Lines.  They have a hotline for passengers who are sailing on the Star Princess on March 2nd, 2010 departing from Valparaiso Chile.   Many of the flights into Valparaiso have been cancelled and Princess is helping passengers look at alternate airports and with getting transfers to ship.   The Star Princess is still scheduled to depart Chile on March 2nd.  If you are having issues with your flights please call Princess at 1-800-Princess and you will get transferred to the Star Princess Hotline.

Here is the latest update from Princess’s Website:

Earthquake in Chile – Star Princess

Star Princess is currently sailing in South America and is en route to Valparaiso, Chile, where the cruise is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, March 2.

Voyage 9005: Arriving Valparaiso Tuesday, March 2

We have been in close communication with management onboard Star Princess and, where possible, our contacts in Chile. Based on the information we currently have obtained, we do not anticipate any changes to our arrival in Valparaiso on March 2.

We are aware that the airport in Santiago is currently closed and appears to be closed through Monday, March 1. We are reviewing the impact of that closure and will provide updates as they become available.

Voyage 9006: Departing Valparaiso Tuesday, March 2

Star Princess is still scheduled to arrive on Tuesday in Valparaiso, Chile on Tuesday, March 2. Based on information that the Santiago airport will be closed for the next 72 hours, at this time we expect embarkation to commence as planned.

However, this is a very fluid situation and could change at any time. We encourage passengers to make any necessary adjustments to plan their flight to arrive in Valparaiso on Tuesday, March 2.

As we receive new information, we will continue to keep our passengers advised of any changes to their cruise itineraries. In the meantime, our thoughts are with those in Chile who are affected by the devastating earthquake.

Chile Earthquake & Tsunami impacts on Cruise Vacations

Current updates from the Cruise lines in regards to the 8.8 magnitude Earthquake in Chile and the Tsunami warnings that followed.   The best news is that the Hawaiian Islands and the NCL Pride of America which was due to be in Honolulu yesterday were not damaged.  The Pride of America and Naval Vessels stayed at sea because in the case of an approaching Tsunami, ships are safer out at sea.   If you are scheduled to sail on the Star Princess departing out of Valparaiso you’ll want to read below and stay in contact with your Travel Agent in case Princess has to change plans.   I will update the CruiseSource.us when I become aware of changes, so you can subscribe in the top right hand corner of the page.

From NCL.com:

Info for Norwegian Sun & Pride of America Guests (updated)

Miami   –    Feb 27, 2010   —
Pride of America Guests
Pride of America will dock in Honolulu at approximately 3 pm HST. Guests embarking on today’s cruise should arrive at the pier between 7 and 9 pm HST. The ship will depart later this evening for its seven-day inter-island cruise. We appreciate our guests’ cooperation.

Norwegian Sun Guests
Norwegian Sun is in Montevideo, Uruguay today as scheduled. The ship will arrive in Buenos Aires, Argentina tomorrow as scheduled and embark guests on the February 28, 2010 cruise. We are closely monitoring the situation in Chile and will keep guests updated as to any changes to the current scheduled itinerary.

Pacific Tsunami Warnings

The Princess ships cruising in areas of the Pacific Ocean rim that have received tsunami warnings, are not adversely affected. As necessary we are making itinerary adjustments to ensure the safety of our passengers and crew. The location of our ships and their status is as follows:

Coral Princess is at sea, en route to Costa Rica and is unaffected.

Dawn Princess is in Auckland, New Zealand today, and has had to make operational adjustments.

Diamond Princess is at sea in Australia waters and is unaffected.

Golden Princess is in Ensenada, Mexico today and is unaffected.

Island Princess arrived at Huatulco, Mexico today but had to depart because of the sea surge.

Pacific Princess was slightly delayed arriving into Suva, Fiji, but is otherwise unaffected.

Sapphire Princess is turning around in Los Angeles today, but because the Port is currently closed embarkation will be delayed.

Sun Princess is at sea in New Zealand waters and will visit Fiordland National Park tomorrow as scheduled, however the time will be reduced.
