NCL Epic Video Contest – Win a Free Cruise

[tweetmeme source=”cruisesource” only_single=false “http://cruisesource.us/2010/10/22/ncl-epic-free-cruise/”%5DBack in August, I came across a fun high-quality passenger-generated video about their NCL Epic Cruise Vacation. I quickly posted the NCL Epic video below in a blog post and asked the Cruise Lines: How do we get more of this?

This is the Remix V.2 version of the original:

Norwegian Cruise Line has repeatedly shown their commitment to Social Media, so it does not surprise me that they are now experimenting with a solution on how to get more high-quality passenger generated video shared across the internet. Norwegian Cruise Line is giving away a Free Cruise for 2 for best Epic Moments Video. Details:

Winning video receives a cruise for two on Norwegian Epic

Direct from NCL Press Release:

MIAMI – October 21, 2010 – Norwegian Cruise Line announces the launch of its “Epic Moments” video contest (www.ncl.com/myepicmoment), where cruisers create short YouTube videos of their vacation on board the line’s newest and most innovative ship Norwegian Epic for a chance to win a Caribbean cruise for two in a balcony stateroom on board the ship.

Cruisers can enter by uploading their vacation videos to YouTube as a video response to the contest overview video by Julie Valeriote, Norwegian Epic’s entertainment director. Every two weeks for the next nine weeks, Norwegian will choose which video is the Epic Moment Semi-Finalist for that period. In mid-February, the 10 semi-finalists will be featured on Norwegian’s YouTube channel and http://www.ncl.com and the public will have a chance to vote for their favorite Epic Moment. The video with the most number of thumbs-up on YouTube will win a seven-day Caribbean cruise for two in a balcony stateroom on Norwegian Epic.

“Freestyle Cruising gives our guests incredible freedom and flexibility on board our ships to enjoy their cruise vacation on their own terms,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line chief executive officer. “Our newest ship, Norwegian Epic, takes Freestyle Cruising to the next level giving countless opportunities for couples, families and solo travelers alike to indulge in vacation moments of a lifetime. We look forward to seeing them come to life through our Epic Moments video contest.”

The first of 10 semi-finalist videos will be chosen on or around November 8, 2010 and will follow with nine more semi-finalists being announced every two weeks. To submit an Epic Moment video, head to www.ncl.com/myepicmoment.

I doubt I am eligible to win…. but I’m still going to go post my video now. ~ Rich Tucker

Cruise – 4 Insider Tips

[tweetmeme source=”cruisesource” only_single=false “http://cruisesource.us/2010/10/18/cruise-tips/”%5DCruiseDeals.com includes a weekly insider tip in their weekly top 5 deals SEAmail.  Here are a few of the recent SEAmail insider cruise tips:

SEAmail Insider’s Tips – Weekly Tips for You

Obstructed Oceanview: What is It? An obstructed oceanview stateroom is a stateroom that has a window, but will likely have a view of a lifeboat or other external structure of the ship.

The Hook: If you’re on a budget, then these are often just a few dollars per day more than an interior cabin. Sure, you won’t see any scenery, but having natural sunlight will enhance your trip and make waking up easier in the a.m.

The Lowdown: If you’re on an itinerary with a lot of sea time, these can be a great value since you won’t miss as much scenery. They tend to be on higher decks which often puts you a bit closer to the action. But always check the price difference for an unobstructed view stateroom. Again, it might be a matter of just a few dollars per day to get that view which is especially nice.

Stateroom Guarantee: What is It? Think hotel…when you make a reservation, you don’t know which room you’ll be in. Rather, you are reserving a room type. A stateroom guarantee is similar–you are reserving a cabin type (Interior, Oceanview, Balcony) but not a specific cabin category.

The Hook: If you’re on a budget and not too particular about location, you can save some money over even the lowest priced stateroom of the type you select.

The Lowdown: Guarantees are a way for the cruiseline to offer an additional discount while still commanding a higher price for the most desirable staterooms. If they end up filling your voyage, you’re likely to end up in the lowest category, but you’ll still have saved a few dollars. On the other hand, you should always check the price for the better categories within the type of cabin you want. The difference may not be that great and we can help you select a stateroom that’s well placed away from elevators, not below the dance club!

All Inclusive: What’s the Deal? These cruises include much of what costs extra on other cruise lines, so you’ll find your total vacation cost is more complete from the start.

The Hook: Sometimes called fully-inclusive or ultra-luxury, these cruises can really be a great value even if the cruise fare is significantly higher than a similar itinerary on another cruise line. That’s because things that cost extra elsewhere, such as gratuities, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, transfers, air transport, shore excursions and alternative fine dining are often included in your upfront price

The Lowdown: While many of the cruise lines are now offering drink packages to help you manage your onboard spending, you will only find all-inclusive cruise lines in the Deluxe and Luxury markets. If you’re the type of person that likes to know what you’re spending and don’t want too many surprises later, then choosing a fully inclusive cruise is not only relaxing but ultimately can be comparably priced to other cruises, with an element of added luxury!

Repositioning Cruises: What’s the Deal? Repositioning cruises are necessary one-way voyages with the main purpose of the sailing being to move the ships from one cruising market/destination to another.

The Hook: Repositioning cruises are your chance to get a fantastic cruise, with a one-of-a-kind itinerary, visiting unique ports-of-call, all for an amazingly low price!

The Lowdown: Many of the repositioning cruises sell for the lowest price per day making them an incredible value. If the repositioning cruise starts its one-way voyage from close to your home, you will also get to enjoy the fact that you only need to purchase one-way air!

2010 Holiday Cruise Deals

[tweetmeme source=”cruisesource” only_single=false “http://cruisesource.us/2010/10/03/2010-holiday-cruise-deals/”%5D Christmas on Celebrity Cruise Line
At CruiseDeals.com, we track cruise pricing trends closely as we pride ourselves in alerting our clients and subscribers to the best deals first.   This week, the CruiseDeals.com Seamail Spotlight focused on Holiday Deals.   Due to the popularity of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Cruises, we originally ran the Holiday Spotlight a month ago.  My expectation when researching the Holiday cruises was that the rates would be higher than they were a month ago.   To my surprise, a couple of the Thanksgiving cruises and Christmas cruises had drastically reduced.  Here are the best Holiday Cruise Deals currently available.

Thanksgiving Cruise:

Enjoy the Celebrity Life this Thanksgiving on the Celebrity Century 5 night Western Caribbean Cruise, starting at only $259 per person.   At $56 per day, this rate can’t be beat.  You’ll be served a 5 star Thanksgiving Dinner and not have to touch a single dish!

Christmas Cruises:

Looking for the hottest Christmas Cruise Deal?  On December 19th, 2010, the Norwegian Jewel is sailing 7-nights roundtrip from New York City.   Oceanview Cabins are available for only $549 per person!   With the average 7-night Christmas Cruise pricing out at over $1000 per person for an oceanview cabin, this is an unbeatable deal.

Out of San Diego, CA, the Carnival Spirit is sailing 7-nights over Christmas to the Mexican Riviera starting at only $649.

New Year’s Eve Cruise:

Ring in the New Year on the Royal Caribbean Majesty of the Seas, 3-night Bahamas Cruise starting at $399 per person.

Looking to book a 2011 Holiday Cruises? I would book during the World’s Largest Cruise Night October 13th -15th, 2010.

Travel: Sleep advice for crossing timezones

[tweetmeme source=”cruisesource” only_single=false “http://cruisesource.us/2010/09/30/travel-sleep-advice-for-crossing-timezones/”%5D

After the original post 5 Tips for better sleep on your cruise vacation, the question about how is the best way to deal with crossing over multiple timezones when traveling was posed. Dr. Robert Oexman gave us these tips:

1. You can start shifting your bed time and wake up time by 2 hours each day prior to your trip. Most of us do not have the luxury of doing this with work schedules.

2. Here is the most reasonable solution. Keep your regular bed time prior to your trip
a. One you arrive at your destination, and it is still daytime, get out and get plenty of sunlight. One of the strongest ways to reset our body clock is to expose ourselves to light; especially sunlight.
b. Exercise is another good way to reset our body clock. Walking outside is a great way to keep us alert and reset our body clock.
c. If at all possible avoid napping. If you do nap, keep it to 30 minutes or less. If you get sleepy go outside and walk.
d. The quicker you adapt all of your behaviors to the new time zone, and stick with it, the faster you will adapt.
e. Research has shown that melatonin can be taken to help with adapting to the new time zone. You can take it 30 minutes prior to the time you want to fall asleep. The dosage does not need to be more than one milligram.

3. Crossing time zones from East to West is easier than traveling West to East. When traveling West to East you usually travel at night. Get as much sleep as possible on the flight. Melatonin is a good solution for helping you get accustomed to the new time zone. You can begin taking it on the plane the first night. When traveling from East to West you usually travel during day light hours. Take a brief nap in the middle of the flight but try and stay awake most of the time. Once you are at home you can take melatonin at bed time to help you adapt to the new time zone.

Dr. Robert Oexman serves as chair of the Sleep To Live Institute’s Sleep and Wellness Board, and he received his Doctor of Chiropractic from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, and his Master of Business Administration from Missouri State University. His graduate studies include the science of ergonomics and sleep disorders medicine and the effect they have on quality of life.
